1 When did you start DJing – and what or who were your early passions and influences? What what is about music and/or sound that drew you to it?
We start deejaying around 1985 (Roberto) / 1995 (Luca) considering our ages differences and our early passions were related to music of course, we love any technical and musical element related to the dj and studio production side.
2 What were some of the main challenges and goals when starting out as a DJ and how have they changed over time? What is it about DJing, compared to, say, producing your own music, that makes it interesting for you?
The main goal is to transmit and let the people breath and dance to the music you love, establish that sort of connection is our main challenge anytime and everywhere we go.
Of course playing our own music is the perfect expression of any artist and performer.
3 How would you define the job and describe the influence of the DJ? How are the experience and the music transformed through your work?
Dj is a sort of pioneer of club music culture and sometimes it really reflects and carry new trends… and not only related to music only
4 What was your first set-up as DJ like? How and for what reasons has your set-up evolved over the years and what are currently some of the most important pieces of gear for you?
We stated with vinyls because that period has no alternatives, our point of change happens when we discover NI Traktor, especially for us as a duo who’s playing back to back it was a true game changer for creativity and workflow.
5 Could you take us through a day in your life, from a possible morning routine through to your work? Do you have a fixed schedule? How do life and creativity feed back into each other – do you separate them or instead try to make them blend seamlessly?
Actually we have a strictly and daily timetable. It allow us to perfectly set up and plan all our studio/office schedule at best.
We focus all our forces into the music production as usual but recently the dj life and roles hav to be wider day by day.
6 Let’s say you have a gig coming up tonight. What does your approach look like – from selecting the material and preparing for, opening and then building a set?
We choose all our Cube Recordings releases for sure, mixed with the music we really feel integrated with our ’sound’. Our musical range is large but always connected to House Music.
7 Can you describe your state of mind during a DJ set? What supports this ideal state of mind and what are distractions? Are there strategies to enter into this state more easily?
No particular strategies, nothing pre planned, just feel the low of the night and crowd… it’s easier and it much more funny and emotional.
8 What are some of the considerations that go into deciding which track to play next? What makes two tracks a good fit? How far do you tend to plan ahead during a set?
It’s essential to follow a flow and look at people reactions constantly, playing back to back we don’t know what’s the next move, like a tennis match!
We would see any of our dj sets as improvisation, expecially because the technology really help to create unique and sometimes unrepeatable moments.
8 Especially thanks to the storage facilities of digital media, DJ sets could potentially go on forever. Other than closing time, what marks the end of a DJ performance for you? What are the most satisfying conclusions to a set?
The perfect ending is when all lights turns on and you clearly see people satisfaction and smiles, that’s our goal… leave a positive message thru the music is what really make our days.. or nights !
9 Art can be a purpose in its own right, but it can also directly feed back into everyday life, take on a social and political role and lead to more engagement.
Can you describe your approach to art and being an artist?
We consider essential to relate the music to other arts, could be visuals, graphics or other type of. We are so influenced by the design and fashion.. maybe because we are Italians?? 🙂
